Now let’s troubleshoot these errors.

Step 1: Run Hardware Test on Your Dell PC

It is always important to run the hardware test to determine any hardware failure. Even if you are not getting the error codes, it is still recommended to run the hardware test in case PC does not boot to the Windows.

Dell systems comes with built-in ePSA diagnostics. In order to run the hardware test, start your PC and immediately keep on tapping F12 on the keyboard to go to the one-time boot menu. In case of laptop you can also run the diagnostic by pressing and holding the Fn on the keyboard and while holding the Fn key, power on the system, once it starts running the test release the Fn key.

In case you receive any error code mentioned above please note down the Error code and validation code and run the remaining test. Contact your system manufacturer with the error codes and get the faulty part replaced.

An error like 2000-0142, 2000-0151, Hard Drive Not Installed or Hard Drive Not Detected indicates hard drive failure.

Step 2: Check the Status of the Hard Drive in BIOS.

Start your system and immediately keep on tapping the F2 key on the keyboard to go into the BIOS.

If the Hard drive is not detected then it would say not detected or unknown. In case it’s unknown contact your system manufacturer to get the faulty part replaced.

Step 3: Re-seat the Hard Drive

Sometimes it is noticed that the connectors become loose and simply reseating the hard drive resolves the issue. Components on your system are either CRU (Customer Replaceable Unit) or FRU (Field-replaceable Unit). FRU components are not supposed to be reseated or replaced by you. You can take the help of a technician. If the Hard Drive is CRU then you can unplug it and plug it back in and re-run the hardware test. If you are still receiving error codes then write down the code and contact your system manufacturer to get the hard drive replaced.

Step 4: Try Good Known Hard Drive

You can install a good known hard drive/compatible hard drive from other identical system and check if the system is booting to the Windows. If the system boots up with another hard drive then it clearly indicates hard drive failure. And in case the system does not boots up even with the good known hard drive then it’s more complicated. In both the case you have to contact the system manufacturer to get the faulty part replaced.

CRU (Customer Replaceable Unit) or FRU (Field-replaceable Unit) rules apply in this case.

Step 5: Try Hard Drive on Good Known Working System.

Install the hard drive in other identical working system and check if the other system boots to the Windows. If it boots up then some other component may be faulty with the Dell system and in case it does not then again hard drive has failed. Contact your system manufacturer in both the case.

CRU (Customer Replaceable Unit) or FRU (Field-replaceable Unit) rules still apply.

Important Note

Please note that the hard drive failure results in data loss due to the hard drive replacement. In case of a hard drive failure, most of the time system does not boot but sometimes it is seen that the system does boot to the Windows even after those error codes. So, in case system boots up, you are quite fortunate to back up all your data because the system may stop booting up any time.

If the system is within the warranty period then you are eligible to get the hardware replacement free of cost but data loss is not covered under the warranty, you can visit any data recovery technicians who can help you to recover the data from the faulty hard drive but they might charge you.

Most of the time when the manufacturer provides you the replacement hard drive it comes with the pre-loaded operating system. In case if it does not come with OS then you can visit this link to install windows 10 using USB flash drive.
